Retailwatch JUNE 2025 analysis

June’s climate had a noticeable impact across retail categories, with winter conditions arriving later than expected.  Companies will need to forecast more than just the weather to sustain growth in their sector.

 

SNOWBOARD or keyboard

Rain or shine, Recreation and Entertainment is one sector that seems to be weatherproof.

Benefiting from two public holidays during June 2025, this category maintained upward momentum - both instore and online.  While some consumers flocked to New Zealand’s ski fields as they opened for the season, others chose to jump online.

As New Zealand becomes more of a key player in the global video game market, this sector is well positioned for continued growth.

 

WINTER NESTING

When temperatures finally dipped, many New Zealanders turned their attention inward, preparing their homes for winter.  Furniture, Appliances and Homewares category saw increased spending, likely driven by both the approaching school holidays and anticipation of family gatherings during the long weekends.

However, the cooler weather arriving in June was to the relief of some big retailers.  Alongside furniture stores, New Zealanders also headed to Department stores seeking their warmer apparel and thicker bedding – with a large portion avoiding the cold altogether by shopping online.

WHERE DOES THE RETAILWATCH DATA COME FROM?

Retailwatch is a joint initiative between Datamine and a Banking and Financial partner.  This partner provides Datamine with anonymised and aggregated retail spend data; we apply algorithms and national / regional weightings in order to create the report.  Retailer categories are taken from the Merchant Category Codes allocated by MasterCard and VISA Monthly and Quarterly periods of 28 days and 91 days are used to ensure the same number of weekdays/weekends are included for comparisons.
