2degrees has used HCL Unica Campaign (formerly known as IBM Campaign) as their marketing campaign management platform for over seven years.  Having remained on the original version of the platform for that length of time, 2degrees wanted to upgrade to the latest version to both optimise the platform’s performance and ramp up marketing communications – however, doing so is more complex than just clicking an ‘upgrade’ button.  Having worked with Datamine for many years, the team therefore enlisted our help in coming up with a plan of action for their Unica Campaign upgrade.


Our first step was to work with the 2degrees team to develop a test environment in which we could monitor the effects of the upgrade before fully switching systems.  The most critical component of this was ensuring that all of their existing campaigns were successfully migrated without any loss of data or functionality and that everything in the upgraded application was functioning correctly.  Having done a number of database upgrades and migrations before, we were able to pre-emptively mitigate many of the risks and challenges similar companies have faced in the past.


The upgrade ultimately went live successfully and with minimal business disruption.  The upgraded platform is significantly more secure and resilient than before (it used to encounter issues on a daily basis).  The 2degrees team has been happy with the new and improved Unica Campaign platform, as well as how efficiently the upgrade was executed despite some challenges that arose along the way – Datamine’s component of the project came in both on budget and on time, which can be unusual for similar migrations and upgrades.  Since then, the company has been able to use a faster, scalable, more efficient and more secure platform to optimise marketing contact and increase ROI.
