Total retail spend in New Zealand for the 28 days ending 28 June 2011 was $2,238.8 million. This represents an increase of 4.1% from the 28 days ending 28 June 2010.
With the exception of Books & Stationery and Recreation & Entertainment, categories across the board on a nationwide basis were flat to positive.
This is an encouraging sign on the retail front. Despite large increases in Fuel/Service Stations (15.7%) and Supermarkets/Food Retailers (6.1%) over same month last year, many categories posted small gains as with the last few months, there is great regional variability in these numbers.
Supermarkets and other Food Retailer spend is up 9.7% in Canterbury, but only 0.8% in Otago. Although Recreation & Entertainment spending is down across the board, which is understandable in the Canterbury, the upper North Island is performing (relatively) well. Although it has been a slow snow season to kick off June in the North Island, Travel & Accommodation down 2.9% in the North Island compared to June last year, there is hope this could rise throughout the later winter months, with Travel & Accommodation spend up 8.3% in the South Island.
There has been more spend in the Waikato (5.3%) on Clothes & Footwear, but Gisborne is down 5.7% vs. last year - perhaps folks chose to spend more on Furniture, Appliances & Homewares in Gisborne as spend there was up a whopping 57.7% in this category. Home building supplies are showing strong growth in Southland (30.3%), and Aucklanders spent 10.6% more than last June.
With many aftershocks still shaking the lower part of the Country, Cantabrians are shaking the bottle a little more vigorously, as Liquor stores are up 19.4% in Canterbury and 17.1% in Taranaki, far ahead of the rest of the country.
Total retail spend in New Zealand for the quarter ending 28 June 2011 was $7,391.4 million. This represents an increase of 1.0% from the previous quarter and an increase of 4.4% from the quarter ending 28 June 2010.
