Datamine Company Profile

Datamine is New Zealand’s business and marketing analytics expert, and specialises in helping businesses to grow by unlocking the potential of their data. Most businesses have a wealth of data trapped in their databases but know very little about how to develop it, largely because they don’t know how to get meaningful, actionable information out of it. We aim to work in partnership with clients to unlock the potential behind their data, and deliver tailored solutions, which then help to deliver marketing strategies adding real value to their business.

1. Tell us about your organisation
Datamine was established in Wellington in 1995, and has grown from a one-man band to a team of 20 in Auckland and Wellington. We provide analytical services to private and public sector organisations in New Zealand, Australia and Asia.

2. What sets you apart from your competitors?
Datamine defines business problems and delivers smart, customised solutions to help solve them. Our collective business, marketing and technical experience enables us to deliver pragmatic, sound and objective advice.

3. What have been some of your defining moments since inception?
The awards that we have won, in particular The Deloitte Fast 50, and the industry recognition we received through the Marketing Association’s Nexus Awards – particularly winning the supreme award in 2004.

4. What is it that makes Wellington a great place to do business?
Wellington is a hub – it’s great to be able to meet people in cafes or at their office and not have to travel for half an hour or an hour across town to see them. It’s also the people – Wellingtonians are incredibly friendly, open to new ideas, and very business savvy, always looking at their return on investment.

5. What are some of the issues that are currently challenging your business?
The main challenge is staff recruitment – being able to find the right people with the right skill set and experience.

6. What are some of the lessons that you have learnt while you have been in business?
Business is all about building relationships and making sure those relationships last through honesty and integrity. It’s important to have open communication lines and a good rapport with the people that you’re working with – whether they are clients or employees.

7. What is something that you know now and wished you had known at the beginning of going into business?
In an ideal world the visions and aims of staff would be somewhat aligned with the company’s vision, but this is not always the reality. People have their own aims and visions and it’s important to understand this and help them reach their potential – even if it means they move on.

8. Where do you see your business in 10 years time and what will be the key to getting it there?

In 10 years time, our vision is that Datamine will continue to have a strong presence in New Zealand, and will also have offices in Australia and Asia. We see New Zealand as the technical centre of excellence, developing new technology and analytical techniques to enable businesses to tackle the issues and challenges that they will face in the future.
